Ode To Present Day Youth

Gracing my mind this week are the youth of today. This age group is often underestimated and contrary to the negative publicity given to our young people, I have come across many level headed youth who are eloquent, wise and compassionate. Off course as with every generation, there will be the handful, who deviate from the norms.

The million dollar question here is, who, shall accept responsibility for a youth who has crossed over to the wild side of life?

You see, most of the time as adults, we forget, that children have to be nurtured and disciplined in a loving environment with boundaries and guidelines and I believe moral values stemming from religion is of great help here. The adage of it takes a whole village to raise a child holds more water than we care to know.

Recently, I was witness to the good work done by volunteers of the Teddy Mobile Clinic. They were some of the many young people who have committed their time to a weekly service. These young and able bodied youth help set up mobile clinics in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and elsewhere bringing medicines to the destitute with basic ailments for free.

Sitting there under the street lights of KL, were also young doctors, and we know how over worked this group of people are. Notwithstanding their hectic schedules, they make the time to serve the homeless in and around KL. These are choices they have made as they are not compelled to give up their evenings by helping to serve the homeless.

There, under the dark skies and KL’s dim street lights were many more students, from various backgrounds grouped as one, assisting in various ways with pure kindness and joy. I noticed it gave them a sense of belonging too. Just like the Teddy Mobile Clinic, youth across the globe do much good work and I dare say they are more than capable of teaching a thing or two to most adults. As adults, we often choose not to hear and not see. This way, it is easier to bunch them and brand them any which way we choose. Yes folks, the youth are somewhat an underestimated age group of society though an extremely resourceful group.

Yet another interesting trait I see in generation Y and Z is their creativity. I find this generation trailblazers, when it comes to wit and thinking out of the box – the wonders they can do with technology is jaw dropping.  So you say, today the young are in an advantageous era. Perhaps so, nonetheless, they are making use of what is given to them in a positive manner.

Many of them are also highly passionate toward global issues. They often demand to see an end inequality; they are very in tune with mother earth, climate change and its negative impact to the future generations. Their potential folks are limitless.

So my dear grown-ups, if you are experiencing bursts of drama from your overly passionate youth, just know the difference but often times, it is age appropriate and we should as we move to help them in a positive way realise that this age group has much to offer and we could actually learn from them. I know I learn so much from this age group.
